Alessandro Scarabello was born in Rome in 1979. He works between Rome, Florence and Brussels. In addition to his painting practice, he is co-founder and co-director of MODO, a cultural association for contemporary art in Brussels, and lecturer at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Rome.
Statement
In recent years, my pictorial research has focused on gesture, evolving according to a practice made up of trial and error that transforms error into experiential possibility. It has evolved precisely in the awareness that the work of art can, at any moment, undergo unpredictable derailment.
With these assumptions, I therefore stand in continuous conflict with the idea of method as a means of ensuring aesthetic control over the work, preferring instead its natural drift and, in fact, disallowing a hierarchical relationship between the work and the artist.
From the very pronounced figuration of my early days, characterized by tonal painting and a brighter palette, I have gradually come to synthesize gesture through a process of formal and chromatic reduction in which color combinations, for example, are often reduced to two or three, or to a bright supporting color that contrasts with a palette of achromatic shades.
My works oscillate between figuration and abstraction by means of quick and essential brushstrokes, emphasizing either the human figure, or forms that play with the interpretation of symbol and archetype.
