Alessandro Scarabello was born in Rome in 1979; he works between Rome, Florence, and Brussels. He co-founded and co-directs MODO, a cultural association for contemporary art based in Brussels. He is a teacher of painting at the New Academy of Fine Arts (NABA) in Rome.

In recent years, his pictorial work has developed into a practice of attempts that turns mistakes into experiential possibilities, and it has taken shape precisely in the awareness that the work of art can, at any moment, go awry. With these conditions, Scarabello is constantly at odds with the idea that one’s method is the means to gain aesthetic control over the work of art, preferring instead for things to drift naturally and disavowing any hierarchical dynamic between work and artist.

In his oeuvre, there is a clear reference to an osmotic process of genesis and undoing of the painted image. Between configuration and reconfiguration, the attempt on the artist’s part is to simply continue to keep it alive, almost as if to reiterate that painting has nothing to promise except its reason to exist in its very making. The brushstrokes become traces, lines, backgrounds that constitute themselves as the nervous system of the very experience of painting. Mid tones of acid color alternate with shapes and figures synthesized in a palimpsest of intermittent geometries and re-framing that break down into false planes.

Among his solo and group shows: Restless Picture, The Gallery Apart, Rome 2024; Land In Land Out, Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence 2024; Italian Painting Today, Triennale, Milan 2023; Repetition Kills, MEF-Museo Ettore Fico, Turin 2022; I Still Paint, The Gallery Apart, Rome 2020; Uppercrust, Palazzo della Corgna, Castiglione del Lago, (Perugia) 2019; Rendez Vous, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium-Musèe Old-Masters Museum, Brussels 2018. He has been invited to several biennial events, including: the Bienal del Fin del Mundo in South America; Biennial for Mediterranean Countries, Alexandria, Egypt; the Biennial of Tunis, and the Biennale dei Giovani artisti di Monza.
